Northwell and Nuvance sign agreement to join forces

Dear colleague,

I am pleased to share some exciting news that marks an important milestone in our journey to raise the bar and raise the health of the communities in our care.

The boards of trustees of Northwell and Nuvance Health have formally approved an agreement that will enable Nuvance, which operates seven hospitals and additional outpatient healthcare services in the Hudson Valley and western Connecticut, to become part of Northwell. The strategic agreement is subject to regulatory approval, and both organizations will continue to operate independently during the regulatory process.

By joining forces, Northwell and Nuvance will further elevate the high-quality care provided to the many patients served by each organization. We are both nonprofit, mission-driven organizations with similar values and an optimistic vision for the future of health care. A combined organization will offer many benefits to the communities we serve, including:

Quality-focused care delivery model

With increased capacity to invest in medical advancements and innovation, an integrated organization will better serve patients in our local communities. When Nuvance joins Northwell, local communities will have access to coordinated care at numerous sites across western Connecticut, the Mid-Hudson Valley, New York City, Long Island and Westchester County. The care delivered will span the full range of services provided at venues of care, including ambulatory, hospital, and post-acute locations.

Healthier communities

A combined organization will enable us to meet the evolving, varied needs of local communities, expand population health initiatives and promote equity of care. This includes access to high-quality specialty care such as oncology, neurology, orthopedics, cardiovascular and organ transplants for patients who have traditionally faced challenges accessing this type of specialty care.

Together, Northwell and Nuvance will also enhance community health initiatives focused on meeting the healthcare needs of vulnerable and at-risk populations, including those covered by Medicare and Medicaid. These initiatives include Northwell’s gun violence prevention efforts, military veteran services, faith-based partnerships, as well as our food insecurity and sustainability programs.

Expanded academic programs and research

As a combined entity Northwell and Nuvance will also drive the expansion of academic programs and clinical research. This could include academic pathways for health professionals to acquire additional degrees and for new graduates to fill high-demand positions. It also would broaden the opportunity to conduct medical research and clinical trials that can lead to transformative scientific discoveries.

The opportunity to welcome Nuvance to Northwell is a familiar one for us. We have a proven track record of successfully integrating community hospitals into our network to enhance care delivery. By investing in these facilities, we have been able to expand clinical program offerings, offer the community the most appropriate venue for their needs and improve the financial stability of these community facilities. Based on our collective experience over the last 25 years and the shared vision with Nuvance leadership, we are well-equipped to successfully navigate this next phase of growth and integration at Northwell.

In the coming weeks, I will visit with Nuvance employees to learn more about them and importantly speak about Northwell’s winning culture and our successful approach to supporting facilities that become part of our health system.

As appropriate, we will provide updates during the regulatory review process to help ensure that you remain informed and aware. In the meantime, our joint press release with Nuvance provides additional information about this exciting news.

Together, Northwell and Nuvance have the opportunity to create something truly special — an integrated health system that is even better positioned to care for the communities we serve. I look forward to working with the Northwell and Nuvance teams to make this vision a reality.

Sincerely,
